Program will include a photo exhibition, a presentation and documentary movies

When: February 26, 2008, 6PM
Where: Tory building, 1-103, University of Alberta (

Parking: is available on Saskatchewan Drive and behind the HUB mall

On February 26, 1992, the military units of Armenia, supported by the Russian 366th Regiment, seized the town of Khojali, in Nagorno Karabagh region of Azerbaijan, and brutally massacred its inhabitants.  This was perhaps the most atrocious of many steps taken by the Armenian government in its expansionist military campaign against the territory of sovereign Azerbaijan.  On that day, the Armenian government’s efforts to rid Nagorno Karabagh of its ethnically Azerbaijani population, resulted in almost 2,000 of innocent civilians, mostly women, children, and elderly, being killed, wounded, or taken hostage by the Armenian military forces.  The town of Khojali that, prior to this vicious night, had 7,000 Azerbaijani inhabitants, was burnt to the ground and turned into a no-man’s land, as were many other Azerbaijani towns and villages of Nagorno Karabagh since Armenia had began its scorch and kill campaign against Azerbaijan.

2008 Black January Commemoration Meeting

Hörmətli həmvətənlərimiz və dostlarımız!!!
20 yanvar günü Azərbaycan tarixinin ən qara səhifələrindən biridir.
Vətənimizin qara səhifələri yaddaşımızdan silinməməlidir. Şəhidlərimizi unutmamaq və digər millətlərə də Azərbaycan xalqına edilən vəhşiliklər haqda məlumat vermək hər bir Azərbaycanlının ve Türkün borcudur.

MAY 28 - is the Independence Day of Azerbaijan!

On May 28, 1918 Azerbaijan proclaimed its independence from Russians for the first time! New formed Azerbaijani Democratic Republic existed for only 2 years. Today's Azerbaijan is independent since September 1991, but people remember and celebrate the day of Republic, Nation and Independence on May 28!  Join us for celebrating the Day of Independence in Hawrelak Park on Sunday,  May 28 2006!

In 1998 the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan issued the Decree on declaring of March, 31 as the day of genocide of Azebaijanis. This decree is demonstration of the national memory about the tragic events in the history of Azerbaijan and Azerbaijani people for the past century. The outrageous facts of mass killings, repression, expatriation of the Azerbaijanis from their native places by Armenians are one of the tragic pages of the world history of XX century.

On the night of February 25-26, 1992  Armenian militants accomplished a brutal massacre of the hundreds of peaceful Azerbaijani civilians in Khojaly, which used to be an Azerbaijani populated town in the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan.

We will commemorate this black day of Azerbaijani history on special meeting February 18 2006 and 2007.

Black January Commemoration - 2007

Over the night from 19 to 20-th January, 1990 without preliminary declaration of the state of emergency military units of former Soviet Union were entered into Baku city and some regions of Azerbaijan. The invasion into Baku of a large contingent of Soviet Army units, interior troops and special destination detachments was accompanied by particular cruelty and unprecedented atrocities. Reprisals were inflicted toward peace population, hundreds of people were killed, wounded, missing...
Operation "Strike" (Udar) was intended to crush the  independence movement in Azerbaijan

January 10 is Qurban Bayrami (the "Feast of Sacrifice")!

It is the great festival of Islam. Its most important feature is the sacrifice of an animal (sheep in Azerbaijan) in commemoration of the ram sacrificed by Abraham in place of his son. The meat is distributed among the poor families in neighborhood.

31st December is the Day of Solidarity and Unity of Azerbaijanis worldwide!

This day, in 1989, for the first time since Azerbaijan was separated, the watchtowers and barbed wires on the border were eradicated and people from Northern and Southern Azerbaijan were joined. Since then, December 31st is the Day of Solidarity and Unity for all Azerbaijanis!
